With population growth estimated to reach 9.6 billion in 2050, crop production – as part of a greater solution – must be intensified. Farms have doubled their land use in the last century, while the population has more than quadrupled. As population continues to increase, land for farming is dwindling.However, on average, 1 kilogram of efficiently used fertilizer will triple crop yields. Africa, though it has an abundance of farmed land, desperately needs fertilizers to restore depleted soils and to feed its people. IFDC is working to create systems that make yield-enhancing inputs more readily available to smallholder farmers, who are then trained in fertilizer best practices.
