There are two types of breast augmentation implants: silicone and saline. The type that is best for a particular woman will depend on her breast anatomy, skin elasticity and body type. The preference between the two types of breast implants: 28% of patients choose saline-filled breast implants; and 72% choose silicone gel breast implants. Breast implants were first sold in the 1960s, but the FDA did not have the authority to regulate them until 1976. FDA approval is for specific models of silicone or saline breast implants manufactured by Allergan, Mentor, and Sientra. No other implants made by the same companies or by other companies have been approved.
