This infographic uses citation analysis, patent filings, and pharmaceutical drug pipeline data to reveal a change in the future of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) treatment. COPD diagnoses are rising steadily, with more than 50 million people worldwide estimated to be suffering from some form of COPD, which can include emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and some forms of asthma. By 2020 COPD is predicted to account for more than six million deaths globally. COPD therapies have been historically dominated by inhaled bronchodilator treatments to relieve symptoms, but are not curative. This analysis shows a move toward a greater focus on a future of preventive therapies.
