Why College Degrees Are So Important in Kentucky

Currently, Kentucky has a college graduation problem. Around 928,000 have never enrolled in college and 464,000 have some college credits but have never attained any credential. In the past 10 years, the number of Kentucky adults in college has declined by 40% overall. This means around 45% of Kentucky adults won’t have a post-secondary credential while 63% of Kentucky jobs will require a post-secondary credential by 2031.

But what’s keeping these adult learners from attending and graduating universities, community colleges, and technical colleges? A large factor is cost. Tuition, bills, and miscellaneous college expenses can leave many with over $6,000 in expenses that financial aid doesn’t cover annually.

Fortunately, the state of Kentucky is providing adult learners with options to help them attain their degree. They connect adult learners with others in similar situations to help build a sense of community and they offer a childcare solutions network to all learners to take care of their family while they attend classes. Ultimately, this support by Kentucky should help drastically increase the graduation rate in Kentucky.
