Harnessing Eiffel Tower Power

In new research from Compare the Market in Australia, the energy needed to power the Eiffel Tower’s twinkling light show has been compared to an assortment of electrical items to determine what else could be powered using the same amount of energy. The results range from charging smartphones to running high-powered speaker systems at loud rock concerts.

The 20,000 light globes on the Eiffel Tower twinkle for five minutes every hour and require 10 kilowatts (kW) every time they light up the sky for that short period of time. That same amount of power could also power the following activities: fully recharge 555 iPhones in an hour, illuminate a neon sign more than twice the size of the tower, power the PA system for one of the loudest rock concerts ever, brew more than 14,000 cups of coffee, run a heart-lung machine for around 3 hours to perform open-heart surgery, power an electric scooter for a 900km journey, run enough hair straighteners to style 400 heads of hair, fully charge 208 beard trimmers, play ‘The Legend of Zelda’ for over 470 hours, and stream movies for 86 consecutive hours.
